Glossary

Baccarat glossary: every roadmap and rule term explained

Short, plain definitions of the words you see on a baccarat table and its roadmap. Each term links to a deeper guide where one exists.

The game

Baccarat
Also called: Punto Banco
A card game where you bet on which of two hands, Banker or Player, ends closer to 9, or on a Tie. The player makes no decisions about drawing cards; fixed rules decide everything.
Banker
Also called: B
One of the two hands dealt each round, shown in red. A winning Banker bet usually pays 0.95:1 because of a 5% commission.
Player
Also called: P
The other hand dealt each round, shown in blue. A winning Player bet pays 1:1. It has nothing to do with you as the person playing.
Tie
Also called: T
Banker and Player finish with the same total. A Tie bet usually pays 8:1, and Banker and Player bets are returned.
Pair
Also called: Player Pair, Banker Pair
A side bet that the first two cards of the Player or Banker hand are the same rank, such as two 7s. It usually pays 11:1.
Natural
A two-card total of 8 or 9. When either hand has a natural, no more cards are drawn.
Third-card rule
The fixed rules that decide whether Player and Banker draw a third card, based on their totals. Nobody chooses; the dealer follows the table.
Commission
Also called: Vig
The 5% taken from winning Banker bets in standard baccarat, which is why Banker pays 0.95:1.
No Commission Baccarat
A variant where Banker pays 1:1, except a Banker win with a total of 6, which pays only half.
House edge
The built-in average advantage of the game on each bet: about 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player and 14.4% on a Tie at 8:1. No roadmap or system changes it.
Shoe
The box holding the shuffled decks, usually 8. A roadmap records one shoe and starts again when a new shoe begins.
Round
Also called: Hand
One deal of Banker and Player cards and its result. Roadmaps add one mark per round.

Roadmaps

Roadmap
Also called: Scoreboard, Road
The set of charts that record every result in the current shoe: Bead Road, Big Road and the three derived roads.
Bead Road
Also called: Bead Plate, Six Bet
The simplest road: one filled circle per round, in order, top to bottom then left to right, marked B, P or T.
Big Road
Also called: Main Bet
The main road. Hollow red (Banker) and blue (Player) circles; the same result continues down a column and a new result starts a new column. Ties are a green slash.
Derived roads
Big Eye Boy, Small Road and Cockroach Pig. They are built from the Big Road and show whether it is repeating a regular pattern (red) or breaking it (blue).
Big Eye Boy
Also called: Big Eye
The first derived road. It compares the Big Road with the column one place to the left and marks red or blue hollow circles.
Small Road
Also called: Small Eye
The second derived road. It compares with the column two places to the left and uses filled dots.
Cockroach Pig
Also called: Cockroach Road, Stick
The third derived road. It compares with the column three places to the left and uses short slashes.
Ask road
Also called: P next / B next
A preview button that shows how the Big Road and derived roads would change if the next result were Player or Banker.
Dragon tail
When a streak runs past the sixth row of the Big Road, the column turns right along the bottom row instead of continuing down.

Patterns

Dragon
Also called: Long streak
Many of the same result in a row, drawn as one long Big Road column.
Ping-pong
Also called: Chop
Banker and Player alternate one by one, so every Big Road column has a single mark.
Double
Results come in pairs — two Banker, two Player — so every column has two marks.
Streak
The current run of the same result. LabxPlay shows it on each table, for example “Banker × 3”.
Gambler's fallacy
The false belief that a result is “due” after a streak of the other. Every hand is independent, so past results do not change the next one.
Martingale
A betting system that doubles the stake after each loss. It cannot beat the house edge and can lose very large amounts during a normal losing run.
